In a shocking turn of events, three anti-fascist activists have come forward with serious allegations against an undercover police officer, claiming he tried to provoke them into committing arson against a shop believed to be a front for far-right activities. This revelation emerged during the ongoing spycops inquiry, which is examining the actions of undercover officers in the UK.
The officer in question, Carlo Soracchi, spent six years embedded within various leftist and anti-fascist groups, where he allegedly attempted to incite these activists to firebomb a specific store. Soracchi has firmly denied these accusations.
During the inquiry, the activists recounted how Soracchi made his incendiary suggestion on two separate occasions, stating that they immediately dismissed the notion since they had no desire to become involved in any form of terrorism.
Additionally, there are claims that Soracchi may have fabricated information in the reports he submitted about the groups he infiltrated. The spycops inquiry is scrutinizing about 139 undercover officers who surveilled tens of thousands of predominantly left-wing activists from 1968 until at least 2010, raising significant concerns about their conduct.
Soracchi adopted a false identity as an anti-fascist and socialist activist between 2000 and 2006, and he is scheduled to answer questions regarding the relationships he built with three women during his time undercover. The inquiry will delve into why he chose to hide his true identity from them and the implications of his actions.
A particularly revealing moment was brought to light by Joe Batty, one of the activists, who described an incident at a New Year’s Eve gathering in 2002. According to Batty, Soracchi mentioned Roberto Fiore, a known fascist with connections to a bombing incident in Italy, who was thought to be operating a charity shop in London to fund far-right activities. Soracchi's comments, which included suggesting it would be "terrible" if something like a firebombing were to occur at the shop, clearly aimed to provoke a reaction among the activists. Batty noted, "That night, we even walked over to check out the shop."
Days later, while being driven by Soracchi through Maida Vale, Batty claimed that the officer reiterated his incendiary suggestion. Batty emphasized, "We would never have acted on [Soracchi’s] suggestion."
In response to the claims, Soracchi has accused activist Dan Gillman of being the one who proposed the firebombing plan, a claim Gillman vehemently denied, calling it an "absolute lie." Notably, Soracchi failed to report this supposed suggestion to his superiors, which Gillman argued undermines Soracchi's credibility, especially given that the officer meticulously documented their activities in detail.
Gillman pointed out, "There is no bigger event of public disorder than someone petrol bombing a charity shop. He reported every single minute conversation we had in these really boring reports."
Another activist, Steve Hedley, confirmed that he and others had cautioned Soracchi against making such reckless suggestions, indicating that the police seemed intent on ensnaring the activists in severe criminal acts after years of infiltration without yielding any meaningful results.
As the inquiry progresses, chief barrister David Barr highlighted that several witnesses have contested the accuracy of Soracchi’s surveillance reports, and he will be held accountable for these alleged discrepancies.
