With a perfect 3-0-0-0 record, Team USA clinched first place in Group C, earning an automatic bye to the quarterfinals. They will enter the single-elimination stage as the No. 2 seed, hot on the heels of Team Canada.
And this is the part most people miss... The Canadians, also undefeated in Group A, secured the top seed with an impressive plus-17 goal differential. Team USA finished the preliminary round with a solid plus-11 goal differential, setting the stage for an exciting quarterfinal clash.
The Americans will face the winner of the qualification playoff between Team Sweden and Team Latvia on Wednesday. With their confidence growing, Matthews and his teammates are ready for the challenge.
"Each game, we're taking steps in the right direction. It's great to see our growth heading into the quarterfinals," Matthews said.
But it wasn't just Matthews who shone. Zach Werenski, Brock Faber, and Tage Thompson also found the back of the net, while Matthew Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson provided two assists each. In goal, Connor Hellebuyck made 23 crucial saves to keep the Americans in control.
For Team Germany, Tim Stutzle scored, and Maximilian Franzreb made 32 saves in a valiant effort. Despite the loss, Germany's Moritz Seider remained positive, highlighting the team's strong starts and their ability to compete with the big nations.
"We need to continue our strong starts and play a full 60 minutes if we want to advance."
And it was Matthews' brilliance that ensured Team USA took control early. He set up Werenski with a perfect cross-ice pass, and Werenski's quick shot through Seider's legs gave the Americans a 1-0 lead.
"It was an incredible pass. Matthews is a talented player, and his vision is exceptional. I was fortunate to be on the receiving end of that pass."
Matthews continued his dominant performance in the second period, scoring a power-play goal to make it 2-0. His ability to play a complete 200-foot game, as described by teammate Brock Faber, was on full display.
"He's a nightmare for other teams, and it's a joy to watch him play."
Faber extended the lead to 3-0, and Thompson made it 4-0 early in the third period. But it was Matthews' second goal of the game, his third of the tournament, that truly showcased his skill. He deflected a pass from Sanderson, sending the puck off the crossbar and then knocking in the rebound.
"His honesty and dedication to the game are remarkable. He's always in the right position, and when he has the puck, we feel confident."
Matthews' recent form with the Toronto Maple Leafs may have raised some eyebrows, but his performance in Milan has been nothing short of exceptional.
"I'm feeling better with each game. It's great to be rewarded individually and as a team."
Stutzle managed to break Hellebuyck's shutout bid, but by then, Team USA had already secured the victory and their place in the quarterfinals.
"Matthews is a leader, and he handles the media scrutiny with grace. He leads by example and is a vocal presence on the bench. He's been a key part of our success."
