Robotically assembled building blocks could be a game-changer for sustainable construction, according to MIT researchers. This innovative approach, using modular 3D subunits called voxels, could significantly reduce embodied carbon emissions, rival construction costs, and construction time. The key to this technology lies in the design of the voxels and the robotic assembly system. By evaluating the mechanical performance and sustainability of existing voxel designs, the team developed three new voxels with high strength and stiffness, enabling efficient robotic assembly. These voxels, made from steel and wood, offer substantial environmental benefits, with embodied carbon emissions as low as 17% of those of traditional methods like 3D concrete printing and precast concrete. The distributed nature of voxel-based assembly allows for incremental construction, making it adaptable and reversible.
