In a groundbreaking decision, Greenwich Council has approved plans for what is set to become London's largest theatre—a remarkable venue boasting 3,000 seats. This new addition will be constructed on the eastern side of the Greenwich Peninsula in southeast London, marking a significant development in the city's cultural landscape.
The ambitious project features two auditoriums, each capable of accommodating 1,500 attendees, which will push it ahead of the famed London Coliseum in the West End, currently holding 2,359 seats, making it the capital's leading theatre in terms of capacity. Construction is slated to commence this coming June, promising an exciting evolution in London's performing arts scene.
Troubadour Theatres, known for its venues in Wembley Park and Canary Wharf, emphasized that this new establishment will enrich London’s cultural offerings and "deliver unforgettable experiences for audiences for years to come." Co-founders and chief executives Oliver Royds and Tristan Baker expressed their enthusiasm, stating, "Obtaining planning permission for the new Troubadour Greenwich Peninsula Theatre is a pivotal achievement for our company and marks the beginning of an exhilarating chapter dedicated to bold and large-scale live performances."
The duo launched their Canary Wharf location last October, which features the first stage adaptation of the popular "Hunger Games" series, while at the Wembley site, audiences are currently enjoying Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic, "Starlight Express."
However, it's worth noting that the planning approval for the new theatre is temporary, granted for a period of ten years. After this timeframe, the area—situated close to the cable car station—is expected to transition into residential developments in line with the overarching Greenwich Peninsula Masterplan.
At a recent council meeting, the planning board officially sanctioned the project. Sylvia Williams, representing the Greenwich Millennium Village Residents' Association, voiced her support for the theatre, describing it as a "welcome addition" to the cultural fabric of the Greenwich Peninsula. She also urged the council to implement provisions for local schools to utilize the theatre space.
Rowley Gregg, the Chief Operating Officer of Troubadour, affirmed that community engagement is a fundamental goal for the theatre. He highlighted that the Troubadour Trust contributes 50 pence from every ticket sold at their venues to fund community initiatives, including workshops and ticket programs for educational institutions and charities.
Once construction begins in June, the theatre is expected to take approximately nine months to complete. Meanwhile, while the Troubadour venue will specialize in dedicated theatre seating, it’s interesting to compare it to the Barbican Centre, which has a similar total capacity spread across various performance spaces. The Barbican Hall accommodates 1,943, the Barbican Theatre houses 1,156, and The Pit offers seating for 200, culminating in a total of 3,299 seats. Additionally, the Barbican operates three cinemas with varying capacities, including one screen with 280 seats and two others with 153 seats each.
Across London, the Royal National Theatre boasts three main auditoriums with a total combined capacity ranging from approximately 2,400 to 2,500 seats.
