Craig Bellamy's Big Decision: Storm Coach Extends Contract Until 2028 (2026)

BREAKING NEWS: A "tremendous honor" — Bellamy makes a pivotal decision regarding his future with the Storm.

Earlier this week, Cameron Munster playfully suggested that his former teammate, Cameron Smith, might be eyeing a coaching position with the Brisbane Broncos, potentially with aspirations to succeed Craig Bellamy down the line.

However, if that’s true, it looks like he will have to bide his time a little longer.

On Friday evening, the Melbourne Storm officially announced that Craig Bellamy has extended his contract with the club, securing his position as head coach through to the end of the 2028 season.

With this new agreement, Bellamy—who was already contracted for 2026—will have completed an impressive 26 consecutive seasons at the helm of Melbourne by the conclusion of his deal. His leadership has been instrumental in transforming the Storm into one of the most consistently successful and professional teams in the history of the NRL.

The statistics surrounding Bellamy's coaching achievements are remarkable. The 66-year-old has guided the Storm to the finals in 22 out of his 23 seasons so far; the sole exception was the tumultuous year of 2010 when the team was stripped of all points due to salary cap violations.

Under Bellamy's guidance, the Storm has reached the grand final 11 times, emerging victorious five times.

"Being the coach of the Melbourne Storm has always represented a significant honor for me. I have a deep affection for this Club and everything it signifies, including its people, our rich history, and our dedicated fans," Bellamy expressed.

"I’ve consistently maintained that I will only continue coaching if the club feels I can still make a valuable contribution. Knowing I have that confidence from the organization for the next three years is reassuring, and I look forward to seeing how much further we can develop as a team.

"I’m also eager to keep collaborating with our coaching and performance staff, who contribute to making the Storm such an outstanding environment. We have an exceptional coaching team that is highly skilled, and I am excited to assist in their ongoing growth and development."

Meanwhile, the Titans showed interest in hiring Bellamy for their head coaching vacancy in 2027 but have since reaffirmed their commitment to new coach Josh Hannay, who is currently enjoying a successful spell on the Glitter Strip after securing contract extensions for stars Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Cooper Bai.

Bellamy has previously hinted at retirement but has made it abundantly clear that he has ambitious goals for at least the next few years, aiming to lead the Storm to another premiership victory.

The Storm has faced disappointment in the grand finals for two consecutive years, losing to the Broncos in last year's championship match following a defeat by Penrith in 2024.

Matt Tripp, Chairman of the Storm, described Bellamy as "one of the all-time great coaches in rugby league history" and expressed confidence in his ability to secure a sixth premiership for the club.

"Craig continues to coach at an elite level, leading an exceptional group of coaching and performance staff who enable him to focus on player development and achieving success," Tripp remarked.

"His passion and determination remain as strong as ever. He possesses the energy and drive needed to propel our team forward and help the Melbourne Storm pursue yet another championship."
